The history of "Kalnapilis" dates back to 1902, when Alberts Foight, a German landlord, brewed the inaugural batch of beer in the "Bergschlösschen" brewery situated in Panevėžys, the heart of Aukštaitia renowned for its brewing heritage. The name "Bergschlösschen" translated to "Pilaite on the hill" in the founder's native language, reflecting the brewery's unique location atop a high hill, nestled in an empty field along the Nevėžys coast.
Beer holds the esteemed title of the most popular alcoholic beverage globally, ranking third overall after water and tea. With origins dating back 9,500 years, beer stands as one of humanity's oldest libations, with the earliest records traced to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The craft of brewing spread across Europe some 3000 years ago, courtesy of Germanic and Celtic tribes. Gambrinus, the legendary King of Flanders, is hailed as the unofficial patron saint of beer brewing, with beer enthusiasts commemorating his supposed birthday on April 11th. However, the true identity of Gambrinus remains shrouded in historical ambiguity, with various medieval figures vying for the title. While our ancestors' brews differed significantly from modern beer, the timeless allure of this beloved beverage endures through the ages.
